Brewing With Love
A friend once told me, “What you do is more interesting than my job?”
And I said, “Why do you say that? He replied: because you are doing something with love that makes people happy. You are creating something and not just giving orders or generating a service.”
That sentence marked me for life. And since then I have taken that phrase as my goal, not only to make good beer and love the process, but also to do it with love for beer. As I have always said… sometimes things turn out very well, sometimes not so much, however making beer with love implies taking care of the smallest detail so that our product is harmless.
I know, I know… Love has become such an overused phrase. Everybody loves something or someone right? Let me explain myself a little better. For me love is care, consistency, autocratic and also adventure. For me, love is changing careers 14 years ago and pursuing a dream. For me, love is being aware of the smallest details and making sure that the processes are going well. For me, love is traveling to the other side of the world and landing in Bangalore, India to pursue my passion and embrace a culture completely different from mine. At the same time, sharing incredible experiences with incredible people and also learning from everything. For me, love is wanting to do things better day by day.
Craft brewing is an art that bridges science and creativity, yet the most essential ingredient may be something a bit harder to measure: love. The beer-making process is the coming together of our sciences – Physics, Chemistry and Biology with one of the oldest traditions of humankind that of brewing. The craftsmanship involved is so precise that it is often forgotten by the sheer magnificence of the first taste enjoyed with loved ones. Here I’ll share my love story for beer, and how its heady flavor is ready to steal hearts.
To brew with love is to approach beer-making as a form of expression, rather than just a product to sell. Many brewers start their journey out of pure passion (believe me when I say I was one of them) and this drive is what distinguishes craft brews from mass-produced beers. While large-scale breweries may rely on formulas and consistency, smaller craft breweries often operate from a place of deep personal investment. Every batch of beer becomes a labor of love and a form of self-expression.
This love manifests in:
- Meticulous attention to detail: Craft brewers who pour love into their work are dedicated to making sure each element is just right. They take extra steps to ensure that the ingredients they use are of the highest quality, the process is controlled and precise, and the final product meets their high standards.
- A commitment to creativity and individuality: Brewing with love means going beyond standard recipes. Craft brewers who infuse love into their work strive to create unique beers, experimenting with flavors and techniques that capture the passion they feel for the art.
- Pride and satisfaction in the craft: Brewers who care deeply about their work take pride in every glass poured. Each batch is a personal achievement, an expression of their dedication, and they find fulfillment in knowing their beer brings joy to others.
- Attention to Detail in Fermentation and Aging: Patience is key in brewing, and love is what gives brewers that patience. For many types of beer, the fermentation and aging process can last weeks or even months. Brewers who genuinely care about their product won’t rush these stages for the sake of profit. They allow the beer to reach its full potential before it’s released to the public.
- Balanced and Nuanced Flavors: Passionate brewers don’t just aim to get a beer to taste “good”—they aim for balance, depth, and complexity. A craft IPA made with love will balance bitterness and aroma with underlying notes of citrus or pine, achieving a harmony that resonates with each sip. In contrast, beers made for profit alone often lack this careful layering of flavors, leading to a one-dimensional drinking experience.
- Consistency and Attention to Quality Control: Love for the craft means that the brewers are invested in making sure each batch is consistent, even as they experiment with new styles. Quality control is paramount, and because passionate brewers are so hands-on, they often have a better understanding of how to maintain quality across batches. This dedication to consistency helps ensure that the beer tastes just as good whether it’s enjoyed at the brewery or across the country.
- Improved Freshness and Drinkability: Brewers who genuinely love their work are less likely to rely on preservatives or artificial additives. Instead, they focus on creating beer that’s fresh and full of life. Because they care about the drinking experience, they want each beer to be enjoyed at its peak, often encouraging drinkers to savor it soon after purchase.
In the world of craft brewing, love isn’t just a nice sentiment—it’s an essential ingredient that defines the quality, authenticity, and spirit of each beer. For brewers, pouring love into their work ensures that they create something worth sharing, and for drinkers, knowing that a beer has been crafted with care enhances the experience of drinking it.
Brewing with love is the difference between simply producing a beverage and creating a masterpiece. It’s an approach that respects the craft, honors the drinker, and keeps the heart of brewing alive. In a world where many industries are dominated by efficiency and profit, craft brewers who operate from a place of love remind us that passion, dedication, and creativity are what truly make a difference—one pint at a time (this last sentence is taken from Randys Muscher’s Tasting Beer book).
Cheers!
